Kochi to Thekkady — the spice road

Thekkady is usually day three or four of a Kerala trip, arriving from Munnar rather than Kochi. Either way the reward is the same: the Periyar boat at first light, before the crowds and while the animals are still at the water.

Local knowledge

What your driver knows that a map doesn't

  • Periyar boat timings and how early you need to be in the queue
  • Which spice gardens are worth the stop and which are shops in disguise
  • The Kumily–Vandiperiyar tea route for the drive back
  • Kathakali and Kalaripayattu show times, so you are not rushing dinner

Best time to go

October to February. The park is open year-round, and the boat is best in the early morning slot in any season.

Common questions

What is the Munnar–Thekkady road like?

Three hours, scenic, and fine for every vehicle in our fleet including the coaches.

Do you book the Periyar boat tickets?

Booking is done online in your own name. Your driver gets you to the queue early, which matters more than the booking.

Can we continue to Madurai?

Yes, with a Tamil Nadu permit quoted in advance.
